The Merino is one of the oldest breeds of sheep in the world. The Merino is named after a nomadic Berber tribe of North Africa who brought their sheep with them to Spain in the 12th century. By the 15th century, the demand for Merino wool in Europe was so high that Spain prohibited any exports of live sheep. In 1809, Napoleon’s invasion of Spain gave the world access to the prized Merino Sheep. Today, most Merino wool is grown in Australia. Merino wool is the finest and softest wool grown. It is the most luxurious wool in the world because of its superior quality.
